4 Steps to Making the Most of Your Summer

By Peter M on July 27, 2018 Updated: August 5, 2026

Can you believe that summer is almost over? Fall is just around the corner and that means school will be back in session. Now is your opportunity to take advantage of every last minute of sunshine, the outdoors, and free time. Here are 4 steps to spice up your summer and make the most of it before September rolls around.

Cirkled In: 4 Steps to Making the Most of Your Summer

Step 1: Set a Goal and Achieve it

There are countless fun activities to do during the summer months. You could go on hikes, make homemade ice cream, play a new sport, see a movie, and much more. While these are all great ideas, as a high school student you want to turn these activities into something measurable so you have something to show for it. College, internship, and job applications are not far in the future, so use these activities as resume builders. Pick an activity you really like and then set a goal. Make a plan to finish 12 books this summer, or set a goal to practice guitar 100 hours to become proficient. You’re still doing activities you love, but instead of knowing you did lots of hiking in the summer, you can tell a college admissions officer that you set a goal of conquering the 30 most popular hikes in Washington state, and achieved it.

Step 2: Explore New Things Along the Way

Don’t stop at the activities that you know you love. Try new activities you’ve never done before. We’re still just teenagers, and summer is the perfect time to get exposed to as many new things as possible. Next time you’re at a street fair, maybe try the Indian food truck instead of the roasted corn stand you always go to. Join a rec beach volleyball league at your community center just for fun. You will be surprised where new experiences will take you.

Step 3: Meet New People

Making connections is one of the most important life skills from high school to college and into the professional world. While you’re conquering goals and trying new things, keep an open mind when meeting new people. You never know who you might meet while going to your city’s top 10 swimming holes or at yoga classes at the community center. These people could become lifelong friends, future resources for finding internships, or just valuable connections for later.

Step 4: Be spontaneous

The easiest way to expose yourself to new opportunities is to be open to anything. Though frightening at first, it’s a good exercise to push yourself out of your comfort zone every once in awhile. Plus, what better way to spice up your summer than to try something you never thought you’d attempt? Maybe this will be the summer you go on a last-minute camping trip with friends, conquering your fear of being around insects outside. Or perhaps you will dust off your old bike and cycle to the mall instead of taking a car. Always be open to new opportunities to make the most of your summer.
