Dissecting the Common App Activities Section: Strategy, Character Limits & Impact Verbs

By Amy S on April 11, 2025 Updated: August 31, 2026

Common App Activities List Tips & Strategy

The Common Application asks about your activities outside of class. This section is super important. It shows colleges who you are beyond your grades and test scores. However, you only have limited space! Getting the most out of this section takes strategy. These common app activities list tips will help you choose activities, write strong descriptions within the common app character limits, and make a real activities section impact.

✨ Want an easy way to track your extracurriculars and stand out on college apps? Try Cirkled In β€” it’s built just for students like you.

Why Your Common App Activities List Matters So Much

Colleges want to see how you spend your time outside the classroom. Your activities show your interests, passions, dedication, and potential contributions to their campus community. Did you stick with something for years? Have you taken on leadership roles? Most importantly, did you make a difference? This section helps paint that picture. It’s a key part of how colleges understand your commitment and potential.

Understanding the Space: 10 Slots, Tight Character Limits

The Common App gives you space for up to 10 activities. For each one, you have very little room to describe it:

  • Position/Leadership Description: 50 characters max (including spaces!)
  • Organization Name: 100 characters max
  • Activity Description: 150 characters max

That 150-character limit for the description is tiny! It’s shorter than a tweet. This means every word, every character, has to count. You need to be concise and powerful. This is central to maximizing common app activities.

Choosing What Activities to Include

You can list up to 10, but you don’t have to fill all slots. Quality over quantity is better. Think broadly about what counts as an activity:

  • School clubs (Debate, Math Team, Drama)
  • Sports (School teams, club teams)
  • Arts (Music lessons, theater productions, visual art)
  • Volunteering and community service
  • Part-time jobs or internships
  • Family responsibilities (like caring for siblings or working in a family business)
  • Hobbies (if pursued seriously, like coding, writing, photography)
  • Research

Choose activities that were most meaningful to you, where you spent significant time, or where you had notable achievements or leadership roles. Order them by importance – put your most significant ones first.

Writing Descriptions with Impact (Action Verbs are Key!)

That 150-character description needs to be strong. Forget full sentences. Use phrases starting with action verbs.

  • Use Strong Verbs: Instead of “Was responsible for,” try “Managed,” “Organized,” “Led,” “Created,” “Developed,” “Coordinated,” “Tutored,” “Fundraised,” “Performed,” “Researched.” Using common app impact verbs makes descriptions dynamic.
  • Quantify When Possible: Numbers add weight. “Raised $500,” “Tutored 10 students,” “Managed team of 15,” “Published 3 articles,” “Volunteered 100+ hours.”
  • Focus on Accomplishments: What did you do or achieve? Not just what the club was about.
  • Be Specific: Instead of “Helped with event,” try “Organized logistics for annual charity event.”
  • Use Abbreviations Smartly: Use common abbreviations if needed (e.g., VP for Vice President, NHS for National Honor Society) but ensure they are understandable.

Example:

  • Weak: Member of the school newspaper club. Wrote articles sometimes.
  • Strong: Staff Writer, School Newspaper. Researched & wrote 12+ articles on school events & student life; edited peer articles for clarity. (Approx. 135 chars)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Vague Descriptions: Not explaining your actual role or accomplishments.
  • Repeating Information: Using the same verbs or ideas across multiple activities.
  • Typos and Grammatical Errors: Proofread carefully! Even with limited space.
  • Not Using Action Verbs: Passive descriptions lack energy.
  • Wasting Characters: Using full sentences when phrases work better.

Final Thoughts: Making Every Character Count

The Common App activities section is your chance to showcase your involvement and impact. Use these common app activities list tips strategically. Choose your activities wisely, focus on your accomplishments, use strong common app impact verbs, and be concise to stay within the common app character limits. Make every character work hard to show colleges the amazing things you do!
