Common App Essay Prompts: Question 7

By Amy S on August 28, 2026 Updated: August 31, 2026

Common App Essay Prompt #7 1080X1080px

Question 7: Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

What if none of the other Common App prompts quite fits your story?

That’s where Common App Essay Prompt 7 comes in.

Unlike the other prompts, Question 7 doesn’t tell you what to write about. Instead, it gives you the freedom to choose the story, experience, idea, or perspective that best represents you.

That freedom can be exciting. At the same time, it can feel overwhelming.

The good news? You don’t need to invent the perfect topic. You need to find a story that reveals something meaningful about who you are.

Common App Essay Prompt 7 about choosing any essay topic
Common App Essay Prompt 7 โ€“ The Open-Ended Essay

1. Look Beyond the Other Common App Prompts

Before starting from scratch, look at the other six Common App essay prompts.

Perhaps one of them sparked an idea that didn’t quite fit. Maybe you’ve been holding onto a story that you couldn’t find the right question for. In either case, Common App Prompt 7 gives you permission to tell it.

Your topic could be:

  • A personal experience that shaped you
  • A question you’ve spent years thinking about
  • A relationship that changed your perspective
  • A passion that doesn’t appear elsewhere in your application
  • A small moment that had a surprisingly big impact
  • A story that reveals a side of you colleges won’t see elsewhere

Rather than forcing your story into another prompt, use Question 7 to create the question your story answers.

2. Choose a Topic That Adds Something New

Your college application already tells admissions officers about your grades, activities, awards, and accomplishments. Your personal essay should go deeper.

Before settling on an idea, ask yourself:

  • What would an admissions officer not know about me from the rest of my application?
  • What experience has shaped the way I think?
  • What part of my personality hasn’t come through elsewhere?
  • What matters to me that isn’t obvious from my activities?
  • What do I want the reader to understand about me after reading my essay?

For example, if your activities list shows that you play violin, your essay doesn’t have to be about winning a music competition. Instead, perhaps the more meaningful story is about the old violin your grandmother gave you and why you still play the same song she taught you.

The topic gets the reader interested. What the topic reveals about you is what makes the essay matter.

3. Don’t Chase the โ€œMost Uniqueโ€ Story

One of the biggest myths about Common App Essay Prompt 7 is that you need an extraordinary story.

You don’t.

A powerful essay could be about:

  • A family tradition
  • A conversation you still think about
  • A hobby your friends don’t understand
  • A mistake that changed your perspective
  • A place that feels like home
  • An object with an unexpected personal meaning
  • A seemingly ordinary day that revealed something important
  • A question you can’t seem to stop asking

What matters is not whether the topic sounds unusual. Instead, it’s whether your perspective on it is unique.

Two students could write about the same summer job and produce completely different essays. One might write about learning responsibility. Another might explore how talking with customers changed the way they understand people.

So don’t ask, โ€œIs this topic unique enough?โ€

Ask, โ€œCan I tell this story in a way only I could?โ€

4. You Can Reuse an Essay โ€” But Don’t Just Copy and Paste

The Common App specifically allows you to submit an essay you’ve already written, including one that responds to another prompt.

That’s helpful if you already have a strong piece of writing. However, an essay written for a different purpose may need some work before it becomes your college personal statement.

Before reusing an essay, ask:

  • Does it reveal something important about me?
  • Does it fit naturally with the rest of my application?
  • Does it show a side of me that isn’t already obvious?
  • Does it answer the new prompt without a lot of explanation?
  • Does it fit the Common App’s word limit?
  • Can I make the reflection more personal?

A great school essay isn’t automatically a great college essay. Your Common App essay should help the admissions officer understand the person behind the accomplishments.

5. Give Your Essay a Clear Focus

Having an open-ended prompt doesn’t mean your essay should be all over the place.

Once you have a topic, ask yourself:

What is the one thing I want the admissions officer to understand about me?

That answer can become the thread that holds your essay together.

You don’t need to:

  • Tell your entire life story
  • Explain every achievement
  • Include every lesson you’ve learned
  • Cover five different experiences
  • Make your essay sound profound

Instead, choose one meaningful story, idea, or perspective and explore it deeply.

As a result, the reader should finish your essay with a clearer sense of who you are.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing a topic because it sounds impressive. Admissions officers aren’t looking for the most extraordinary story; they’re looking for an authentic one.
  • Repeating your rรฉsumรฉ. Your essay should add depth and personality rather than list more accomplishments.
  • Trying too hard to be unique. A familiar experience can become a memorable essay when your perspective is specific and honest.
  • Using an old essay without revising it. If you’re reusing an essay, make sure it fits the Common App and contributes something new.
  • Trying to tell your entire story. One meaningful thread is usually more powerful than a summary of your life.

Final Thoughts

Common App Essay Prompt 7 gives you something the other prompts don’t: complete creative freedom. However, that doesn’t mean you have to come up with an extraordinary story.

Start with what matters to you. Think about the experiences, relationships, questions, or small moments that have shaped the way you see yourself and the world.

Then ask one final question:

What can I tell colleges about myself that they won’t find anywhere else in my application?

That’s where your best topic may be hiding.

You don’t need to tell the biggest story.

Tell the story that only you can tell.
