Question 5: Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
This prompt is really about change.
You might be tempted to focus on your biggest accomplishment: winning a championship, becoming class president, starting a business, or receiving an award. But the accomplishment itself isn’t what makes a strong essay.
The real question is: What happened that changed the way you see yourself or others?
Maybe you failed at something. Maybe someone challenged an assumption you had. Maybe you took on a responsibility that forced you to grow up. Or maybe you simply had a realization that changed how you approached something important.
The event is the starting point. Your growth is the story.

1. Choose an Experience That Changed You
Don’t choose an experience simply because it sounds impressive. Choose one that gave you something meaningful to reflect on.
Think about moments when you:
- Failed at something you expected to succeed at
- Took on a leadership role and discovered it wasn’t what you imagined
- Changed your mind about someone or something
- Faced a responsibility that pushed you outside your comfort zone
- Discovered a strength or weakness you hadn’t recognized before
- Experienced something that changed how you define success
A small experience with a genuine realization can make a stronger essay than a major accomplishment that doesn’t reveal much about you.

2. Show the “Before” and “After”
The best Question 5 essays have a clear shift in perspective. Before the experience, you thought one way. Afterward, you understood something differently.
Ask yourself:
- What did I believe before this happened?
- What challenged or disrupted that belief?
- What did I realize afterward?
- How did my behavior or perspective change?
- Where do I see that change in my life today?
For example, maybe you once thought asking for help meant you weren’t capable. After struggling with a difficult project, you learned that knowing when to ask for help is actually a strength.
That’s the story. Not the project itself, but the change in how you see yourself.
3. Don’t Be Afraid of Failure
Failure can be particularly powerful for this prompt because it naturally creates an opportunity for reflection.
You could write about:
- Not making a team or organization
- Losing an election or competition
- Receiving a disappointing grade
- Making a mistake that affected someone else
- Watching a project you cared about fail
- Realizing that your original approach wasn’t working
The important thing isn’t the failure. It’s what came next.
Did you become more resilient? More willing to listen? More comfortable asking for help? Did you discover that your definition of success had changed?
Colleges don’t expect you to have everything figured out. They want to see that you can learn from experience.

4. Make the Growth Personal
Avoid ending with a lesson that could appear in anyone’s essay.
Statements like:
- “I learned the importance of hard work.”
- “I learned to never give up.”
- “I learned that teamwork is important.”
- “This experience made me a better person.”
don’t tell the admissions officer much about you.
Instead, explain what specifically changed in your thinking:
- Did you stop measuring yourself against other people?
- Did you become more comfortable with uncertainty?
- Did you learn to listen before forming an opinion?
- Did you change how you approach leadership?
- Did you become more willing to admit when you’re wrong?
- Did you develop a different understanding of another person’s experience?
Specific reflection makes the essay personal.
5. Keep the Focus on You
Other people can absolutely be part of your story. A teacher, coach, parent, friend, or teammate may have been the person who sparked your realization.
But don’t let the essay become their story.
If someone changed your perspective, focus on:
- What you believed before meeting them
- What they said or did that challenged you
- Why their perspective affected you
- What you understood differently afterward
- How that understanding continues to influence you
The admissions officer is reading your essay to understand you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the most impressive accomplishment instead of the most meaningful one.
- Spending too much time describing what happened and not enough explaining why it mattered.
- Turning the essay into a résumé entry. Your activities list already tells colleges what you’ve accomplished.
- Using a generic lesson. “I learned perseverance” isn’t enough without showing what perseverance means in your life.
- Making the transformation sound too perfect. Real growth is usually gradual, complicated, and ongoing.

The best Question 5 essays aren’t necessarily about your biggest accomplishment or most dramatic experience. They’re about a moment that changed the way you see yourself or someone else.
Don’t just tell colleges what happened. Show them what you thought before, what changed, and how that experience still influences you today.
Your growth doesn’t have to be complete. You don’t need to have everything figured out. What matters is showing that you can reflect on your experiences, learn from them, and see yourself a little differently because of them.
